Home Birth Prep List: What Each Item Is For (From a Doula & Expecting Mama)

Preparing for a home birth is about more than gathering supplies — it’s about creating a space where your body feels safe, supported, and free to open. As both a doula and an expecting mother preparing for my own home birth, I want to share the exact items I’m using — and why each one matters.

Below is a breakdown of my home birth prep list, including the purpose of each item so you can feel confident and informed as you prepare.

Birth Pool & Tub Setup Essentials

These items support comfort, sanitation, and safety if you plan to labor or give birth in water.

  • Hose – Used to fill the birth pool with warm water from a sink or tub.

  • Oasis Elite Pool Liner – A single-use liner that creates a clean, sanitary barrier inside the pool.

  • Plastic Liner (Under Pool) – Protects floors from spills or leaks.

  • Birth Pool – The inflatable pool where labor and/or birth may take place. (Your midwife will bring this).

  • Tubing + Electric Pump – Used to inflate and deflate the pool efficiently.

  • Fishnet – Removes debris (vernix, clots, or stool) from the water during labor.

  • Pump to Drain Water – Safely empties the pool after use.

  • Towel for Hose/Sink – Prevents dripping and water damage during setup and takedown.

  • Water Thermometer – Ensures the water stays at a safe and comfortable temperature.

  • Repair Patches – Used in case of a small leak in the pool.

  • Shower Liner – Provides extra water protection for surrounding surfaces.

Midwife Birth Kit & Postpartum Essentials

These items are typically provided by the midwife and support both the birth and immediate postpartum period.

  • Extra Pool Liner – Backup liner in case the first one is compromised.

  • Instant Perineal Cold Pack – Reduces swelling and soreness after birth.

  • Nasal Aspirator – Gently clears mucus from the newborn’s nose or mouth if needed.

  • Additional Fishnet – Backup tool for maintaining clean water during a water birth.

  • Extra Pool Side Liner – Adds an extra layer of sanitation and protection.

  • High-Waisted Mesh Panties – Hold pads securely while allowing airflow.

  • Sitz Bath Herbs – Support perineal healing and comfort after birth.

  • Sterile Gloves – Used by the midwife during exams or procedures.

  • Disposable Chux Pads – Protect surfaces during labor and postpartum recovery.

  • Peri Bottle – Allows gentle rinsing of the perineal area after birth.

  • Syringes – Used for medications or flushing if needed.

  • Amnicator – Tests whether fluid is amniotic fluid if membranes rupture.

  • Straws – Help the birthing person stay hydrated during labor.

  • Umbilical Cord Band – Secures the umbilical cord after it is cut.

Why Preparation Matters

When your birth space is thoughtfully prepared, your nervous system can relax — and that relaxation supports physiological birth. Knowing what each item is for removes fear, builds confidence, and helps you feel truly held during the process.

Whether you’re planning a home birth, birth center birth, or simply want to understand your options, preparation is a powerful form of advocacy.
